The decline in population since the late 19th century is mainly due to the loss of jobs as a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the increasing mechanization of agriculture .
economy
The place and its surroundings were dominated by agriculture for centuries; most people lived on a self-sufficient basis ; In the village itself, various craft and service professions developed . In the late Middle Ages and early modern times, viticulture was promoted, but - after the phylloxera crisis in the late 19th and early 20th centuries - was almost stopped. At the beginning of the 20th century there were two mills on the banks of the Charente; one of them is now used to generate electricity. Since the 1960s tourism has played a not insignificant role in the economic life of the municipality in the form of renting out holiday homes ( gîtes ).
history
The region was already settled in the Neolithic ; ancient finds are not known.
Before it was annexed by the Counts of Angoulême, the area was part of the historical province of Poitou ; the first mention of the place name Cenomo comes from the year 1280. Since the 15th century Chenon belonged to the barony of Verteuil .
Attractions
- The Romanesque parish church of Saint-Antoine , mostly made of roughly worked rubble stones, dates from the 12th century; Large parts of the building were later plastered inside and out. In front of the otherwise unadorned facade, which is raised by a two-part bell gable, there is a vestibule - rare in the region - whose function can only be speculated about. The interior of the church was largely stripped of plaster so that the layers of rubble stones of different heights are visible; In contrast, the window and arch reveals as well as the semi -columns are made of precisely hewn stone material. The vault of the nave is still plastered and covered with regularly arranged joint paintings .
- The Château de Chenon dates from the 15th century. The main building ( corps de logis ) has stone cross-cut windows and is flanked by two round or polygonal stair towers. In the garden area there are farm buildings that were added later as well as a small well house . The privately owned country palace was recognized as a Monument historique in 1987 .
