Étagnac ( Occitan Estanhac ) is a place and several hamlets (hamlets) existing and farmsteads community with 991 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the extreme northeast of the western French department of Charente in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . Étagnac belongs to the historical province of Angoumois , although there are both scenic and cultural references to the neighboring Limousin .

location

The place Étagnac is on the northern edge of the ancient meteorite crater of Rochechouart-Chassenon at an altitude of about 250 m above sea level. d. M. near the border to the Limousin. Located in the north of the old cultural landscape of the Angoumois a short distance from the Haute-Vienne department , the place is about 64 km (driving distance) in a north-easterly direction from the city of Angoulême ; to Limoges it is only about 41 km in an easterly direction. The climate, determined by the Atlantic and the Massif Central , is temperate; Rain falls throughout the year.

The continual population decline in the 20th century is essentially due to the increasing mechanization of agriculture and the associated loss of jobs.

economy

The place and its surroundings were dominated by agriculture for centuries; Most of the people lived on the produce of their fields and gardens as self-sufficient ; cattle breeding was also practiced. Craftsmen, small traders and service providers have settled in the village. Until 1932, antimony was mined near the hamlet of Lussac . Since the 1960s tourism has played a not insignificant role in the economic life of the municipality in the form of renting out holiday homes ( gîtes ).

history

A bridge pier destroyed in 1912 indicates that in antiquity a Roman road from Poitiers (Pictavium) to Périgueux (Vesunna) probably ran through the municipality. Other evidence, such as fragments of ceramics and roof tiles (tegulae), suggest settlement in Roman times.

In the 12th century, the Order of the Grammontens , which was dissolved in 1772, founded a priory near the Vienne , of which the simple chapel has still been preserved.

Attractions

Chateau de Rochebrune
  • The parish church of St-Pierre-aux-liens was built from rubble stones in the 12th century ; however, it was enlarged in the 15th century. In addition, the walls of the vaulted apse were secured by buttresses made of precisely hewn stones. The narrow windows and the mighty crossing or bell tower indicate a certain defensive strength of the building.
  • The market hall, built from rubble stones, dates from the 19th century.

Surroundings

  • About a kilometer east of the village is the one that began around the year 1100, but not until the 16th and 17th. Rochebrune Castle , a four-wing complex with rounded corner towers and surrounded on all sides by moats, was completed in the 19th century . The southeast wing was demolished in 1808, opening the courtyard to the outside. The building has been recognized as a monument historique since 1959 .
  • The small church of the former Grammontese priory Étricor is dedicated to St. Consecrated to Pardulf von Gueret ; it dates from around 1160 and is located approx. 4 km southeast of the village. The priory was dissolved as early as the 16th century and subsequently demolished. The nave is barrel vaulted ; the semicircular apse has an attractive three-window position. The church has been classified as a monument historique since 1987 .
