Verteuil-sur-Charente is a French municipality with 658 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Charente in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine ; it belongs to the Arrondissement of Confolens and the canton of Charente-Nord .
history
Verteuil had belonged to the House of La Rochefoucauld from at least the 12th century . In 1567 the fifth synod of French Protestants took place here. Verteuil was created as a municipality in 1793. From 1801 to 1926 Verteuil belonged to the Arrondissement Ruffec , after its dissolution it belonged to the Arrondissement Angoulême, and since the administrative reform of 2008 it has been part of the Arrondissement Confolens. In the second half of the 19th century, Verteuil lost about a third of its inhabitants: from 1339 in 1846 to 888 in 1901. In the 20th century the number fell by a further 20 percent to just over 700 today. 1962 changed the community her name in Verteuil-sur-Charente.
