The Prince Edward Island Liberal Party is a liberal party in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island . As is usual with regional parties in Canada, it is only loosely connected to the parent party at the federal level, the Liberal Party of Canada . In the April 2019 elections, the Liberals lost their majority in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island for the first time in twelve years ; both the Conservatives and, for the first time, the Greens won more seats.
Since it was founded in 1851, the Liberals have been the only party alongside the Conservatives to provide government at the provincial level. There are only a few differences between the two parties: Both are positioned in the middle of the political spectrum, with the liberals tending to the left and the conservatives tending to the right on individual issues. Traditionally, the liberals are more likely to find their supporters among Catholics and French- speaking Acadians in the west of the island, while the conservatives are more likely to be found among Protestants and in the east of the island.
