biography

Ghiz grew up in Charlottetown. He served in the Canadian Armed Forces Reserve in the early 1990s while in high school. He received his bachelor's degree in political science from Bishop's University in Sherbrooke . After his father's death in 1996, Ghiz moved to Ottawa , where he initially worked as a personal assistant to Deputy Prime Minister Sheila Copps . From 1998 he worked at the Bank of Nova Scotia . In 2001 he joined the staff of Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien as an advisor on matters relating to the Atlantic provinces .

In April 2005, Ghiz ran for chairmanship of the Prince Edward Island Liberal Party , which was then in the opposition. In doing so, he prevailed against the former health minister Alan Buchanan. In the subsequent elections to the legislative assembly of Prince Edward Island on September 29, 2003, he won in the constituency of Charlottetown-Rochford Square and was then opposition leader. In the elections on May 28, 2007, Ghiz led the Liberals to a resounding victory. He took up the post of prime minister two weeks later, on September 12th, ending the eleven-year term of his conservative predecessor Pat Binns .

Ghiz 'election meant that for the second time in the history of the province the son of a prime minister took office: Thane Campbell ruled from 1936 to 1943, his son Alex Campbell from 1966 to 1978; both also belonged to the Liberal Party. In the elections on October 3, 2011, the Liberals secured 23 of the 27 seats in the legislative assembly, one fewer than before. On November 13, 2014, Ghiz announced his impending resignation as soon as the party had appointed a new chairman. He indicated the possibility of being politically active at the federal level in the future. He handed over the office of Prime Minister to Wade MacLauchlan on February 23, 2015 , and resigned as a member of parliament a day later.
