history
The city's official founding year is now 1802, when Gilbert Hyatt, an American loyalist , built a mill at the confluence of the Magog and Saint-François rivers. The settlement was originally called Hyatt's Mills after its founder , but changed its name in 1818 in honor of John Coape Sherbrooke , the outgoing Governor General of Canada . Today's Sherbrooke was created on January 1, 2002 by merging the old Sherbrooke with the cities of Bromptonville, Fleurimont, Lennoxville and Rock Forest as well as the communities of Ascot, Deauville and Saint-Élie-d'Orford.
Originally the population was mostly English-speaking. While the French-speaking share was only 16% in 1851, in 1898 it was 59%. Today Sherbrooke is mostly a French-speaking city, but apart from Montreal, for example, it is the only place in the province of Québec that has an English-language daily newspaper and a university.
