Sean Patrick Maloney (born July 30, 1966 in Sherbrooke , Québec , Canada ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . He has represented New York State in the US House of Representatives since 2013 .

Career

Maloney studied from 1986 at Georgetown University in Washington, DC , and then at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville , where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1988 and his Juris Doctor in 1992 . He then worked as a lawyer. From 1997 to 2000 he was on President Bill Clinton's extended staff .

In 2006 he ran unsuccessfully for the nomination as a Democratic candidate for the election of the Attorney General of New York State . He was then on the staff of Governor Eliot Spitzer from 2006 to 2007 . In the 2012 congressional elections , he was elected as his party's candidate for the US House of Representatives. He defeated the Republican incumbent Nan Hayworth . He took up his new mandate on January 3, 2013. After two re-elections so far in 2014 and 2016, he can continue to exercise his office today. His new legislative term runs until January 3, 2019 with the option of a further candidacy in 2018.

Maloney lives with his partner in Coldspring , New York State.
