Arthur Sidney Tompkins (born August 26, 1865 in Middleburg , New York , † January 20, 1938 in Nyack , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1899 and 1903 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Arthur Sidney Tompkins was born in Middleburg, Schoharie County , about two months after the Civil War ended . The family moved to West Nyack in 1866 . He attended public schools in Clarkstown and Nyack in Rockland Counties until 1878 . Then he studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1886 and then began practicing in Nyack. Between 1887 and 1889 he was Police Justice in Nyack. Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party . He was elected chairman of the Rockland County Republican Committee in 1888 . In 1890 he was a member of the New York State Assembly. As a delegate he took part in all Republican State Conventions from 1888 to 1906 and as a delegate or substitute ( alternate ) in all Republican National Conventions from 1888 to 1900. Between 1893 and 1898 he held the positions of district judge and guardianship and probate judge ( surrogate ) in Rockland County.

In the 1898 congressional election for the 56th Congress , Tompkins was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 17th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Benjamin Barker Odell on March 4, 1899 . He was re-elected once. Since he on a run again in 1902 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1903 Congress of.

After his time at Congress, he went back to his practice as a lawyer in Nyack. He was elected Judge of the New York Supreme Court in 1906 and re-elected in 1920 and 1934. In January 1930 he moved to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of New York - a position he held until his resignation in 1936. He died on January 20, 1938 in Nyack and was then buried in Oak Hill Cemetery .
