Gaetano Victor "Guy" Molinari (born November 23, 1928 in New York City , New York ; † July 25, 2018 there ) was an American politician . Between 1981 and 1989 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Guy Molinari was the son of S. Robert Molinari , who was also an MP in the New York State Assembly . He first attended private schools. In 1945 he graduated from New Dorp High School on Staten Island . He then attended the Wagner College there until 1949 . After a subsequent law degree at the New York Law School and his admission to the bar in 1953, he began to work in this profession. In the meantime, he served during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953 as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps . Politically, he joined the Republican Party . Like his father, he was a member of the State Assembly between 1974 and 1980 . In 1979 and 1980 he participated in the regional party conventions of the Republicans for New York State; in 1980 and 1984 he was a delegate to the respective Republican National Conventions , at which Ronald Reagan was nominated as a presidential candidate.

In the 1980 congressional election , Molinari was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 17th  electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Democrat John M. Murphy on January 3, 1981 . After four re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on December 31, 1989 . Since 1983 he represented the 14th district of his state there; his daughter Susan followed him there . His resignation came after accepting the office of borough president for Staten Island. He held this position from 1990 to 2001.
