William Willett Junior

William Forte Willett junior (born November 27, 1869 in Brooklyn , New York , † February 12, 1938 in New York City ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1907 and 1911 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Forte Willett Jr. was born about three years after the end of the Civil War in the then still separate city of Brooklyn and grew up there. During this time he attended public schools and graduated from the law faculty of New York University in New York City in 1895 . He was admitted to the bar the following year and then began practicing in New York City. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the 1906 congressional elections for the 60th Congress , Willett was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 14th constituency of New York , where he succeeded Charles Arnette Towne on March 4, 1907 . After a successful re-election, he decided not to run again in 1910 and left the Congress on March 3, 1911 .

After his time at the congress he went into real estate business. He bribed Queens County Democratic leader Curley Joe Cassidy with $ 10,000 for a nomination to the New York Supreme Court in October 1911 . In 1912 she was charged with bribery. You were sentenced to 14 months in prison in Sing Sing in 1913 . As a result, they jointly filed several appeals, but finally began their prison sentences in January 1915. Willett was elected by inmates to judge the Mutual Welfare League , an organization responsible for enforcing discipline among inmates. Several of his teeth were knocked out after a series of unpopular decisions. As a result, he spent the remainder of his sentence in another prison. He died on February 12, 1938 in New York City and was then buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Brooklyn.
