Stephen Joshua Solarz (born September 12, 1940 in New York City , † November 29, 2010 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party .

Solarz studied at Brandeis University in Waltham , Massachusetts , where he received his Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1962 . He received his Master of Arts (MA) from Columbia University in New York City in 1967 . He then taught political science at Brooklyn College from 1967 to 1968 . He began his political career in the New York State Assembly , of which he was a member from 1969 to 1974. For the Democratic Party, he was a 1974 delegate to the Democratic National Mid-term Convention . In the same year he was elected to the 94th United States Congress for his party . In the following years, Solarz managed to be re-elected a total of eight times in New York's 13th congressional electoral district . He represented New York State from January 3, 1975 to January 3, 1993 in the United States House of Representatives . In the elections to the 103rd Congress in 1992, he was unable to run again as a candidate. After leaving the House of Representatives, he was named chairman of the Central Asian-American Enterprise Fund by President Bill Clinton, a post from 1993 to 1998.

Solarz spent his old age in McLean , Virginia . He died of esophageal cancer in a Washington, DC hospital on November 11, 2010 .
