The 39th Canoe Racing World Championship took place from August 18 to 21, 2011 in the Hungarian city of Szeged . The world championship was organized by the International Canoe Federation (ICF). After 1998 and 2006, Szeged hosted a canoe racing world championship for the third time . Initially, the French city of Vichy was planned as the venue. There, however, the damming of the Allier River and thus fair racing conditions could not be guaranteed. The ICF then re-awarded the world championship.

A total of 37 competitions were held in the canoe and kayak disciplines . The distances of the regattas were 200 m, 500 m, 1000 m and 5000 m. Paracanoeing was again part of the official competition program. The venue was an artificial regatta course 2,400 m long and 122 m wide in the west of Szeged. Around 1100 athletes from 94 nations took part, the largest number of nations at a canoe world championship to date.

The World Championship was the main qualification competition for the canoe racing competitions of the 2012 Summer Olympics . 70% of all quota places were allocated here.
