Sebastian Brendel (born March 12, 1988 in Schwedt / Oder , Frankfurt (Oder) district , GDR ) is a German canoeist and three-time Olympic champion .

Career

Brendel has been practicing Canadian sports in Schwedt since 1996, but has been training at KC Potsdam since 2000 . He has been a federal police officer since September 2008 . He achieved his sporting breakthrough in 2005 when he was 17-year-old in Szeged, Hungary, when he became double world champion in single canoe at the Junior World Championships . In 2007 he qualified for the national team in the performance class for the first time and was runner-up in the four-man canoe at the world championships in Duisburg . In 2008 he made his claims to a start at the Olympics clear at the national sightings as the first in the ranking. At the European Championships in Milan in 2008 he won silver and bronze in the single canoe. At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, he won the gold medal in single canoe.

At the 2013 World Championships in Duisburg , Brendel won gold in the single-canoe over 5000 meters, and he also came second over 1000 meters. With the relay he also won the silver medal over 200 meters. At the World Championships in Moscow, he defended his 5000 meter title. He also won gold over 1000 meters in a single canoe and silver over 500 meters.

At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro , Brendel again won the gold medal in the single canoe and thus defended his Olympic title. After the Czechoslovak Josef Holeček, he is only the second canoeist to do this. With Jan Vandrey he also became Olympic champion in the two-man canoe over 1000 m.

Private

He lives in Potsdam with his family with two children, a daughter (* 2010) and a son (* 2013) .

Since September 1, 2008, he has also been employed by the Federal Police as Chief Police Officer.
