At the Olympic Games in 1968 , eighteen-year-old Ivan Patzaichin was able to take seventh place in the single canoe over 1000 meters. Together with Serghei Covaliov , who is five years his senior , he won gold in the two-man canoe . In 1970 the two became world champions.

At the 1972 Olympic Games , Patzaichin won the single-canoe competition by over three seconds. Two hours later in the two-man final there was a photo finish decision, after which he and Covaliov were three hundredths of a second behind the winning boat from the Soviet Union. In 1973 Patzaichin became world champion in the single on the 1000 meter course.

At the 1976 Olympic Games , medals in the Canadier over 500 meters and over 1000 meters were awarded for the first time. Patzaichin competed in both single competitions. He finished seventh over 500 meters and fifth over 1000 meters.

In 1977 Patzaichin became world champion in the single over 1000 meters, a year later he won the title over 10,000 meters. In 1979 he became world champion over 500 meters with Petre Capusta . Together with Capusta, Patzaichin won silver over 500 meters at the 1980 Olympic Games . The next day he won gold over 1000 meters with Toma Simionov .

Patzaichin and Simionov became world champions over 1000 meters in 1981 and 1983 and in 1982 they won the title over 10,000 meters together. At the Olympic Games in 1984 , the two won silver over 500 meters and gold over 1000 meters.

Subsequently, Patzaichin ended his active career and became a coach. From 2000 to 2009 he was in charge of the Romanian national canoe racing team and was also Vice President of the Romanian Canoe Association until 2009. In the elections on August 6, 2009, Patzaichin was voted out of office as vice-president, and on September 11, 2009 he also resigned as national coach because he felt abandoned by the association's management.
