Toma Simionov (born October 30, 1955 in Caraorman , Tulcea County ) is a former Romanian canoeist . He and Ivan Patzaichin won two Olympic gold medals in the two-man canoe .

Career

Toma Simionov competed at the 1978 World Championships in Belgrade with his brother Gheorghe in a two-man canoe, the brothers won the bronze medal over 500 meters behind the boats from Hungary and the Soviet Union. Over 1000 meters and over 10,000 meters, the two received the silver medal behind the Hungarians Tamás Buday and Oszkar Frey . In the following year, three different Romanian crews competed on the three courses at the World Championships in Duisburg , the Simionov brothers won the bronze medal behind the Soviet duo Wassyl Yurtschenko and Juri Lobanow as well as Buday and Frey on the 1000 meter course . At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , Toma Simionov competed over 1000 meters with Ivan Patzaichin, the two of whom won with more than two seconds ahead of Olaf Heukrodt and Uwe Madeja from the GDR.

At the World Championships in 1981 Patzaichin and Simionov won over 1000 meters and fought for the silver medal behind the Hungarians Tamás Buday and László Vaskúti over 10,000 meters . In 1982 in Belgrade , Patzaichin and Simionov were without a medal over 1000 meters, but won gold over 10,000 meters. In 1983 in Tampere the two Romanians won again over 1000 meters, over 10,000 meters they were second behind Buday and Vaskúti as in 1981. At the Olympic Games in 1984 , the two Romanians won silver over 500 meters with two seconds behind the Yugoslavs Matija Ljubek and Mirko Nišović , over 1000 meters Patzaichin and Simionov repeated their Olympic victory and won with one second ahead of Ljubek and Nišović.
