Mirko Nišović

Mirko Nišović (born July 2, 1961 in Zemun , Belgrade ) is a former Yugoslav canoeist . He took part in the Olympic Games three times from 1980 to 1988 and won a gold medal and a silver medal.

Career

The 1.82 m tall Nišović took part in the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow and together with Matija Ljubek took fourth place in the two-man canoe on the 1000-meter course. At the 1982 World Championships , Ljubek and Nišović won gold over 500 meters in front of their home crowd in Belgrade. Over 1000 meters they took second place behind the Hungarian two-man canoe. 1983 in Tampere , Ljubek and Nišović repeated their success over 500 meters and won the bronze medal over 1000 meters.

On the 500-meter course, the two Yugoslavs also won the title at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , over 1000 meters they received the silver medal behind the Romanian world champions of 1983 Ivan Patzaichin and Toma Simionov . The GDR canoeists Olaf Heukrodt and Alexander Schuck won the title at the 1985 World Championships in Mechelen on the 1000-meter course , while Ljubek and Nišović received the silver medal. The two Yugoslavs triumphed on the non-Olympic 10,000 meter course and won the third joint world championship gold medal. In Nišović's third Olympic start in 1988 in Seoul , Ljubek and Nišović no longer reached the final.
