Matija Ljubek
Matija Ljubek (born November 22, 1953 in Belišće , † October 11, 2000 in Valpovo , Osijek-Baranja County ) was a Yugoslav canoeist . He took part in the Olympic Games four times from 1976 to 1988 and won two gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze medal.
Career
The 1.80 m tall Ljubek won the only medal for the home team at the World Championships in Belgrade in 1975 when he was third with the single canoe on the 10,000 meter course. The following year he won gold over 1000 meters and bronze over 500 meters at the Olympic Games in Montreal . In 1978 , again in Belgrade, he won his first world title on the 1000 meter course. At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , Ljubek finished eighth and ninth on the individual routes. He achieved the best placement in Moscow with a fourth place in the two-man canoe over 1000 meters together with Mirko Nišović . Together with Nišović, Ljubek won three world championship titles in the 1980s, two silver and one bronze. There was also an Olympic gold medal and a silver medal in Los Angeles in 1984 . At Ljubek's fourth Olympic start in Seoul in 1988 , Ljubek and Nišović no longer reached the final.
Ljubek was shot dead by a relative in a family dispute shortly after the 2000 Olympic Games, where he had accompanied the Croatian team as an official.
