János Parti
János Parti [ ˈjaːnoʃ ˈpɒrti ] (born October 24, 1932 in Budapest ; † March 6, 1998 there ) was a Hungarian canoeist and Olympic champion.
He started canoeing in 1951. As early as 1952, at the Olympic Games in Helsinki, he finished second in the single Canadian over 1000 meters behind Josef Holeček from Czechoslovakia. In 1954 he won gold at the World Championships in Mâcon on the same route . At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 , he competed on the 10,000-meter course and was second behind the Romanian Leon Rotman .
After he was only fourth at the 1958 World Championships in Prague on the 1000-meter course, he finished second at the 1959 European Championships in Duisburg . Also in Duisburg, he defended his European title from 1957 on the 10,000-meter course, which he won for the third time in 1961. At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome , the 10,000-meter course was no longer on the program. Parti won the 1000 meter course and after two silver medals still received Olympic gold.
Parti won a total of 18 Hungarian championship titles. During his career he studied English and then law. After his career he worked in shipbuilding and as a trainer. In the 1990s he was Vice President of the Hungarian Canoe Association.
