The 16th Canoe Racing World Championships took place from July 29th to August 2nd 1981 in Nottingham ( United Kingdom ). The venue was the regatta course of the Holme Pierrepont water sports center .

On five days of the competition, medals were awarded in 18 disciplines of canoe racing: single kayak (K1), two-person kayak (K2) and four-person kayak (K4) as well as single-canoe (C1) and two-person canoe (C2) for men , over 500, 1000 and 10,000 meters respectively. For women, it was over 500 meters in K1, K2 and K4.

With seven titles, the GDR team became the most successful nation and, with Birgit Fischer , who won three titles just like Vladimir Parfenowitsch from the Soviet Union , was the most successful female athlete at these world championships.
