The People's Republic of Bulgaria ( Bulgarian Народна република България ; transcription Narodna republika Bălgarija ) was the name of the Bulgarian state that existed from 1946 to 1990 as a close ally of the Soviet Union . After the Second World War, Bulgaria came under the Soviet sphere of influence, which led to the establishment of the People's Republic after the abolition of the Bulgarian monarchy . Its first constitution was passed on December 4, 1947. In its history it was politically dominated by the Bulgarian Communist Party , which was renamed the “ Bulgarian Socialist Party ” after the political change in 1990 and the end of the Iron Curtain . The capital of the state was Sofia .
