Olaf Heukrodt (born January 23, 1962 in Magdeburg ) is a former German canoeist and current sports official and canoe trainer . He was a five-time Olympic medalist in canoe racing .

Sports career

At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow he won bronze in the single canoe (C1) over 500 m and the silver medal in the two-man canoe (C2) over 1000 m.

In the 1984 Olympic Games of Los Angeles he could not compete because the countries of the Eastern bloc this boycotted . At the Summer Olympics in Seoul in 1988 he won the gold medal in C1 over 500 m and silver in C2 over 1000 m. At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona , he again won bronze in the C1 over 500 m for the reunited Federal Republic.

For this he was awarded the silver bay leaf on June 23, 1993.

Sports official

After completing his active career, Heukrodt became a personal member of the National Olympic Committee for Germany and a member of the expert committee of the Deutsche Sporthilfe Foundation .

In April 2005, Olaf Heukrodt was elected President of the German Canoe Association to succeed Ulrich Feldhoff . In 2006 he was appointed to the presidential commission for competitive sport of the German Olympic Sports Confederation . Since 2007 he has been a member of the executive committee of the European Canoe Association (ECA). In 2010 he resigned as President of the German Canoe Association. His successor was Thomas Konietzko .

Professional career

Olaf Heukrodt studied sports science from 1987 to 1991 at the branch of DHfK in Berlin. After the branch in Berlin was closed, he was unable to finish his studies due to preparations for the 1992 Summer Olympics. He completed an apprenticeship as a banker at Dresdner Bank . He was employed there until 2008. He lives in Leipzig, where he is currently working as a canoe racing trainer at SC DHfK Leipzig .
