Who was who in the GDR?

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Who was who in the GDR? is a biographical reference work that was first published in 1992 by Ch. Links Verlag . The first editions were published by the historian Jochen Černý and included around 1500 entries on public figures in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The lexicon notes the position of the respective personality within the social system of the GDR and gives their life in a short summary. The author of the respective short biography can be researched using an author abbreviation.

development

In 1996 a digitized edition appeared on three disks with 2146 biographies on GDR history, edited by the historian Bernd-Rainer Barth .

Over the years, Who Was Who in the GDR? conceptually revised and greatly expanded. In 2000 the Federal Agency for Civic Education printed a free special edition. The 2006 edition (“1st edition of the 4th edition”), like the current fifth edition, comprises two volumes. It has the subtitle: “A Lexicon of East German Biographies” and was edited by Helmut Müller-Enbergs , Jan Wielgohs , Dieter Hoffmann , Andreas Herbst and Ingrid Kirschey-Feix . The fifth, updated edition was published in March 2010 with a total of almost 4,000 biographies.

Parallel to the printed version, the Federal Foundation for the Processing of the SED Dictatorship offers an online version for free research.
