European men's volleyball championship 1993

The 1993 European men's volleyball championship took place in Finland from September 4th to 12th . Germany defended fourth place. The games took place in Oulu and Turku . Italy won the title.

mode

First there was a preliminary round, in which the twelve teams were divided into two groups of six. The two best teams in each group reached the semi-finals. The table third and fourth played for places five to eight.

qualification

Finland was set as the host. The best eight teams from the 1991 European Championship were also automatically qualified. These were Russia (formerly Soviet Union ) as the defending champion, the second Italy , the third Netherlands , the fourth Germany , the fifth Bulgaria , the sixth Yugoslavia , the seventh Poland and the ninth France .

22 teams played in two rounds for four more places. In the first round, the twelve participants were drawn in six pairings, which were played back and forth. The six winners and ten other teams formed four groups of four in the second round, in which the teams competed against each opponent at home and away. The group winners qualified for the finals.
