European men's volleyball championship 1983

The men's volleyball championship in 1983 took place in the GDR from September 17th to 25th . Germany was represented by the host's team among the twelve participants, while the German selection failed in the qualification. The final round games took place in East Berlin , Erfurt and Suhl . The Soviet Union became European champions for the seventh time in a row.

mode

First there was a preliminary round, in which the twelve teams were divided into three groups of four. The two best teams in each group played in the final group "everyone against everyone" for the title. The remaining teams played for positions seven to twelve. Results from teams that met in the preliminary round were carried over to the final round.

The GDR took sixth place with Steffen Bohne , Jan-Türk Daßler , Edgar Heinold , Lutz Hofmann , Jörg Meschke (all SC Leipzig), Bernd Dankert , Joachim Hänsch , Roland Kühner (all SC Dynamo Berlin), René Hecht , Ulrich Sernow ( all TSC Berlin), Peter Schulz and Diethard Uebel (all SC Traktor Schwerin). The trainer was Lothar Schröter .

qualification

The GDR was set as the host. The top five teams from the 1981 European Championship were also automatically qualified. These were the Soviet Union as defending champions, the second Poland , the third Bulgaria , the fourth Czechoslovakia and the fifth Romania .

Thirteen teams played in three groups for six more places. The two best teams in each group qualified for the finals. In Group A, the Dutch prevailed over Italy with home advantage in 's-Hertogenbosch . The Greeks also use their home advantage in Athens and qualified together with Finland . The Federal Republic failed in Debrecen against France and hosts Hungary .
