The 1981 European men's volleyball championship took place in Bulgaria from September 19-27 . Germany was represented by the Federal Republic and the GDR among the twelve participants. The games took place in Varna , Pazardzhik and Burgas . The Soviet Union became European champions for the sixth time in a row.

First there was a preliminary round, in which the twelve teams were divided into three groups of four. The two best teams in each group played in the final group "everyone against everyone" for the title. The remaining teams played for positions seven to twelve. Results from teams that met in the preliminary round were carried over to the final round.

The GDR reached sixth place with Bernd Dankert , Joachim Hänsch , Roland Kühner , Jens Rathfelder , Gerald Zedler (all SC Dynamo Berlin), Hartmut Gommlich , René Hecht (all TSC Berlin), Steffen Bohne , Lutz Hofmann (all SC Leipzig), Peter Schulz , Diethard Uebel and Uwe Westphal (all SC Traktor Schwerin). The trainer was Lothar Schröter .
The Federal Republic of Germany took eleventh place with Burkhard Sude , Christoph Naumann , Frank Winkler , Jörg Zander , Ernst Schäfer , Gerhard Weber , Dieter Markus , Horst Rath , Jörg Brügge , Ulrich Kampa , Ralf Nitzlaff and Martin Keck .

Bulgaria was set as the host. The best five teams from the 1979 European Championship were also automatically qualified. These were the Soviet Union as defending champions, the second Poland , the third Yugoslavia , the fourth France and the fifth Italy .
