1989 European Women's Volleyball Championship

The 1989 European Women's Volleyball Championship took place from September 2nd to 10th in the Federal Republic of Germany . The games were played in Stuttgart , Sindelfingen , Hamburg and Karlsruhe . The Soviet Union won the title for the twelfth time with a 3-1 win in the final against the GDR.

mode

The twelve participants were divided into two groups of six in the preliminary round. The group winners and runners-up reached the semi-finals. The other teams played for positions five to twelve.

Placement games

The games for places one to eight took place in Stuttgart. The remaining placement games were played in Sindelfingen.

The Federal Republic of Germany played with Renate Riek , Gudrun Witte , Sigrid Terstegge , Karen Baumeister , Andrea Sauvigny , Gudula Staub , Michaela Luckner , Nina Sawatzki , Stefani Legall , Sabine Nasarow , Susanne Schlarmann and Silke Meyer .

The GDR played with Grit Naumann , Ute Steppin , Dörte Techel , Christina Schultz , Susanne Lahme , Annette Heymann , Ines Pianka , Pietsch , Ariane Radfan , Katja Weimann , Brit Wiedemann and Dörte Krüger .

qualification

The Federal Republic was set as the host. The top three teams at the 1987 European Championship were also automatically qualified. These were the GDR as defending champions, the second Soviet Union and the third Czechoslovakia .

Eighteen other teams played in two groups of four and two groups of five for eight more places in the finals.
