The Soviet women's national volleyball team was a selection of the best Soviet female players who represented the Soviet volleyball federation in international tournaments and internationals. In her time she was one of the most successful teams in the world with five titles at world championships, four Olympic gold medals and numerous other tournament victories in other competitions.

With the end of the Soviet Union in 1991, the national team was also dissolved. In 1992 the United Team played temporarily . The direct successor is the Russian national team . The following national teams also emerged from the former Soviet republics :

World Championship

At the first three volleyball world championships , there was no getting around the Soviet Union. She won the tournaments in the finals in 1952 against Poland , 1956 against Romania and 1960 against Japan . Only in 1962 were the Soviet women stopped by the Japanese in their own country in the final. At the 1967 World Cup , the team did not take part because of a boycott and so missed its only tournament. When they returned in 1970 , the Soviet Union won the title for the fourth time, and four years later Japan was more successful in the final. At the third World Cup in the Soviet Union, the host took third place in 1978 . Two weaker tournaments followed, each ending in sixth place. In their last appearance in 1990 , the Soviet Union was again world champion against China .

Olympic games

The female volleyball players of the Soviet Union were also among the most successful participants in the Olympic Games . At the premiere in Tokyo in 1964 , the Soviet Union reached the final against the hosts. At the tournaments in 1968 and 1972 , the Soviet women defeated Japan in the final, in the fourth edition of the duel in 1976 in Montreal the Japanese again triumphed . At the 1980 Games , the Soviet Union as host did not meet opponents from Asia for the first time, but the GDR selection could not prevent the Eastern Europeans from becoming Olympic champions for the third time. The record winner missed the 1984 tournament because of the boycott , but in 1988 in Seoul , the Soviet women were back on top after beating Peru in the final .

European Championship

From 1949 to 1979 the Soviet Union dominated the European volleyball championships . Only in 1955 could Czechoslovakia prevent the Soviet women from winning the title. In 1981 they lost to Bulgaria in the final . Two years later a series of finals against the GDR began in Rostock . First the East Germans won, then the Soviet Union. In 1987 the GDR was successful for the second time and in 1989 the title went back to the Soviet Union. He stayed there after the final against the Netherlands in 1991 .

World cup

The Soviet Union won the first edition of the World Cup against Japan in 1973 . In 1977 she took eighth and last place. In the following two tournaments it was enough for third place. In 1989 the Soviet women lost to Cuba in the final . In 1991 they came third again.
