The Japanese national women's volleyball team is a selection of the best Japanese female players represented by the Japan Volleyball Association in international tournaments and internationals. The Japanese had their strongest phase in the 1960s and 1970s with several titles at the Olympic Games, world championships and victory in the World Cup. In Asia they are among the most successful teams.

history

World Championship

When they first took part in a volleyball world championship, the Japanese lost to the Soviet Union in the 1960 finals, but two years later they defeated the same opponent in his homeland and became world champions for the first time. As hosts, they defended the title in 1967. In 1970 the Soviet Union was successful in the final, four years later Japan won again. In 1978 the Japanese women lost in the final against Cuba . After that, the results got worse. In 1982 the team was fourth, then there were two seventh and eighth places, also in 1998 in their own country. In 2002 the Japanese did not get past 13th place. At the 2006 World Cup , the hosts lost the game for fifth place against China . In the 2010 World Cup , Japan was again hosted and finished third. The 2014 tournament ended for the Japanese in the second group stage and seventh place. In 2018 they finished sixth in front of their home crowd.

Olympic games

In 1964 in Tokyo , Japan became the first Olympic champion in volleyball against the Soviet Union. At the next tournaments in 1968 and 1972 there were final defeats against the same opponent. At the 1976 Games , Japan won gold in the eternal duel for the second time. In 1984 in Los Angeles it was still enough for bronze, but in 1988 (fourth) and 1992 (fifth) Japan missed the medal ranks. In 1996 in Atlanta , the team was eliminated in the preliminary round. For the 2000 Games , the Japanese women failed to qualify. During the tournament in 2004 , they were fifth. The same result came in Beijing in 2008 after losing in the quarterfinals to eventual winners Brazil . In 2012 in London , the Japanese won the bronze medal after defeating South Korea . In 2016 in Rio de Janeiro they were eliminated in the quarterfinals against the USA . For the tournament in 2020 , Japan is set to host.

Asian Championship

In 1975 Japan became the first Asian champion in the final against South Korea . In 1979 the Japanese lost in the final against China . Four years later they won their second title against the same opponent. In 1987 China was more successful again. After a third place in 1989, there were two more defeats in the final against their permanent rivals. This was followed by three third and one fourth place. In 2003, Japan was absent for the only time. Two years later the Japanese women finished third and in 2007 they won their third title - again against China. After a third place in 2009, they reached the 2011 and 2013 finals, but had to admit defeat to China and Thailand . With a sixth place they achieved the worst result in 2015. In 2017, they won the title again in the final against Thailand, which they successfully defended against the same competitor two years later.

World cup

In the first edition of the World Cup, Japan lost to the Soviet Union in the final. Four years later, the Japanese won the competition against Cuba. In 1981 they lost the final against China. Two fourth places followed. From 1991 to 2007 Japan was always there, but did not get past fifth place. In 2011 there was again a fourth place for the Japanese women. In 2015, they finished fifth. They achieved the same result in 2019.

Nations League

In the Nations League 2018 , the Japanese came in tenth place. In 2019 they finished ninth.

World Grand Prix

Japan started the World Grand Prix in 1993 in sixth place . The next year, the Japanese were fourth. After two worse tournaments they finished fourth again in 1997 in their own country. After that there were two seventh and one eighth place. In 2001 and 2002 Japan finished fifth, but in 2003 they were eliminated in the preliminary round. In the years 2004 to 2007 it went from ninth to fifth and back to ninth place. In 2008 and 2009 the Japanese finished sixth, in 2010 and 2011 they came fifth. In 2012 they missed the finals in ninth place. In 2013 they finished fourth again. In 2014 in Tokyo they played their only final in this competition, where they were defeated by the Brazilians. The other tournaments from 2015 to 2017 finished in sixth, nine and seven.
