The Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) is the umbrella organization of all national sports associations for volleyball and beach volleyball . The head office has been in Lausanne since 1984 ; the World Volleyball Federation is an association under Swiss law .

history

In April 1947, the representatives of 14 national associations met in a grand hotel in Paris after several European representatives had suggested the establishment of an international association. The FIVB was founded under the leadership of the French delegate Paul Libaud. Libaud was elected first president; he remained in office for 37 years - until 1984.

The following countries were represented when it was founded:

Championships

The first men's world championships were held in 1949 and those of women in 1952. The first international championships also increased interest in the sport of volleyball. The number of volleyball players grew steadily; new national associations emerged and joined the FIVB.

At the 1959 meeting of the IOC in Munich , it was decided to include volleyball in the program of the Olympic Games . The first Olympic gold medals were won by the USSR for men and Japan for women .

In 1969, the World Cup was introduced, which was the qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games from 1991 to 2018 .

In the early 1990s, two more annual competitions were introduced: the World League for men and the World Grand Prix for women. These were replaced in 2018 by the Volleyball Nations League .

The discipline beach volleyball was in the 1996 Olympic program added.

Members

From the initial 14 founding members, the number of members of the association rose to 45 (in 1955); In 1968 there were already 101. To date, 222 national associations have joined the FIVB (as of July 2015) .

President

After the Mexican Rubén Acosta Hernandez took over the office of President of Libaud in 1984, the association moved to Lausanne and intensified its efforts to spread volleyball around the world. In June 2008, Acosta resigned prematurely from his office. The previous Vice-President Wei Jizhong from China became the new President . In 2012, the Brazilian Ary Graça Filho was elected as his successor.

tasks

The association oversees all volleyball and beach volleyball competitions that are held internationally and arranges the worldwide planning and organization of volleyball events; in doing so, it often works with other international associations such as the IOC. The world federation defines qualification procedures and competition regulations for tournaments and decides on issues such as team line-ups and substitution rules.

The association determines international volleyball rules. In order to make the sport more attractive (also for the media and sponsors ), some rule changes have been made in recent years. These range from regulations regarding clothing to a fundamental change in counting methods.

The association is the highest international authority in volleyball and can, among other things , decide on doping , player transfers and changes in nationality. The association publishes world rankings which are used as the basis for seeding lists in international competitions.

The association organizes the following competitions:

The association is also involved in the organization of other events of international importance, e.g. B. Qualifications for Olympic Games and World Championships.

By recruiting media partners and sponsors, the FIVB endeavors to spread volleyball worldwide. It also maintains special programs for this purpose. This includes the establishment of development centers in areas where the sport is not yet popular and support for organizations that do not achieve the quality of international standards.

FIVB Heroes

“FIVB Heroes” is the association's image campaign. The aim of the campaign launched in June 2011 is to generate more attention for the athletes' achievements and to increase public interest in volleyball. The focus of the campaign is on 33 volleyball and 29 beach volleyball players from 16 countries who have been appointed to the “FIVB Heroes” team by the FIVB because of their sporting successes and special merits and who work as ambassadors for volleyball worldwide.

Criticism and competition from FIABVB

Former President Rubén Acosta Hernández had to answer in court several times for allegedly accepting benefits when concluding sponsorship contracts and for alleged falsification of accounts . So far, however, he has always been acquitted.

The FIABVB was created in 2006. The competitive association was founded at a meeting on November 25th and 26th, 2006 in Copenhagen . The initiator of the inaugural meeting, attended by 30 delegates, was the Swiss Jean-Pierre Seppey , a former Secretary General of the FIVB. However, none of the 222 member associations of the FIVB made the change to the FIABVB. Werner von Moltke, President of the German Volleyball Association , justified the fact that his association remained in the FIVB with the words: “Hedge shooting is useless. That has to be fought democratically. "

According to its own statement, the FIABVB wanted to take action against the controversial FIVB President Acosta Hernández - with whom Seppey had worked closely until 2005 as FIVB General Secretary. Acosta was accused by its critics, including the Argentine Mario Gojman, among other things, of having falsified FIVB balance sheets and of having collected generous bonuses for sponsorship contracts of his association.
