Volleyball Nations League

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Volleyball Nations League is a competition for men's and women's national volleyball teams. The first edition took place from May to July 2018. The Nations League is the successor to the Volleyball World League (men) and the Volleyball World Grand Prix (women).

history

In the 1990s, the FIVB World Volleyball Federation established the World League (since 1990) and the World Grand Prix (since 1993) as annual competitions for national teams in addition to world championships and continental tournaments. With the Volleyball Nations League, these two competitions will be replaced by uniform tournaments for men and women. In October 2017, on the occasion of the association's 70th birthday in Paris, the FIVB announced information about the mode and named the participants for the first edition. President Ary Graça Filho spoke of a “key moment for the future of our sport. The Volleyball Nations League is the most important competition in FIVB history and will revolutionize the way volleyball is presented ”. He also announced new forms of marketing and greater involvement of fans.

mode

The mode is the same for men and women. 16 nations compete against each other. Twelve of these sixteen participants are set up as “core teams”. Four teams compete as “challenger teams” and fight against relegation. The preliminary round is played for five weeks in group matches according to the mode of everyone against everyone . Each core team is host at least once and each team plays at least 15 games. The five best teams in the preliminary round and the host will determine the winner in the final round.
