The Brazilian men's national volleyball team is a selection of the best Brazilian players who represent the CBV (Confederação Brasileira de Voleibol) in international tournaments and internationals.

history

World Championship

Brazil took part in the 1956 World Cup for the first time and finished eleventh. Since then, the team has not been absent from any tournament. Four years later, the Brazilians finished fifth as hosts. In the next three tournaments there were double-digit placements with 13th place in 1966 as the low point. At the tournaments in 1974 and 1978, the Brazilians improved with places nine and six. In 1982 in Argentina they were only defeated by the Soviet Union in the final. After that they finished fourth three times, including in 1990 in their own country , and in 1994 fifth. At the 2002 World Cup , she became world champion for the first time in the final against the Russian men's national volleyball team . They successfully defended the title against Poland in 2006 in Japan . In Italy in 2010 they defeated Cuba in the final and won their third World Cup title in a row. In 2014 in Poland they lost the final against the hosts. At the 2018 World Cup there was the same duel in the final and Brazil came second again.

Brazil is the only nation that has been represented in all Olympic volleyball tournaments so far. In the first four appearances, they took places between seven and nine. In 1980 in Moscow they rose to fifth place. Four years later, at the 1984 Games , they lost in the final against hosts USA . In 1988 in Seoul a fourth place followed. In 1992 in Barcelona , the Brazilians won their first gold medal in the final against the Netherlands . Four years later , they finished fifth and sixth at the 2000 tournament . The second gold medal was at the 2004 Olympics with a success in the final against Italy . In 2008 in Beijing , the defending champion lost the final against the USA. Also in London in 2012 , Brazil won the silver medal after losing 3-2 in the final against Russia . In 2016 in Rio de Janeiro , the team won the gold medal again in front of a home crowd against Italy. At the international qualification tournament in Varna , they secured their starting place for the 2020 Olympic Games .

South American Championship

In the South American Volleyball Championship Brazil is the dominant nation. The CBV team was only absent from the 1964 tournament in Buenos Aires . In the other 26 tournaments since the premiere in 1951 in Rio de Janeiro , the Brazilians always won the title. In the final, they mostly played against Argentina or Venezuela . Most recently they won against Argentina in 2019.

World cup

The Brazilians were not represented at the first edition of the Volleyball World Cup in 1965. After a sixth place in 1969 and an eighth place in 1977 , they came third in 1981 for the first time in the medal ranks . In the next three tournaments they deteriorated by one rank each. In 1995 they reached third place again. In 1999 they finished fifth. At the 2003 tournament they won this title for the first time in the final against Italy. Four years later they managed to defend their title against Russia. In 2011 they finished third again and in 2015 they missed for the second time because they hosted the Olympic Games the following year. In 2019 they won the World Cup for the third time in the final against Poland.

In the Nations League 2018 , the Brazilians came fourth. They also lost the game for third place in the 2019 final , this time against Poland.

World league

The Brazilians were an integral part of every tournament in the world league . When they first participated in 1990 , Brazilians took third place. This was followed by two fifth places. In 1993 they celebrated their first title win in the final against Russia. Third in 1994 and second in 1995 , they won more medals before finishing fifth three times in a row and third again in 1999 and 2000 . In 2001 they won the final against Italy, but lost the 2002 final in Belo Horizonte to Russia. They then have five titles in a row. At the 2008 tournament in Rio de Janeiro , they missed a medal in fourth. In 2009 they triumphed again against Serbia and a year later they won their last world league title against Russia. From 2011 to 2017 they lost five finals. In addition, he came sixth in 2012 as the worst result in this competition and fifth in 2015 .
