The United States men's national volleyball team is a selection of the best players in the United States , representing the United States Volleyball Association (USVBA) in international tournaments and international matches. The Americans won the world championship and two Olympic gold medals in the 1980s. In 2008 they were again Olympic champions. At the continental championships they are the most successful team next to Cuba.
history
World Championship
In the first two appearances in the volleyball world championship , the USA finished sixth in 1956 and seventh in 1960 . They missed the 1962 World Cup, four years later they came eleventh. Even in the next four tournaments they did not get past double-digit placements. In 1986 in France , however, they ended the dominance of the Eastern European teams and became world champions with a final victory over the Soviet Union . In 1990, however, they retired as defending champions without a win in the preliminary round. Four years later , they won their next medal in third place. They then finished ninth twice. At the 2006 World Cup , the USA lost the game for ninth place against the German team . In 2010 they finished sixth and in 2014 they finished seventh. At the 2018 World Cup , they won the game for third place against Serbia .
Olympic games
The USA participated in the first Olympic tournament in Tokyo in 1964 and came in ninth. In 1968 they reached seventh place. They missed the next three tournaments. In 1984 in Los Angeles they returned as hosts and became Olympic champion in the final against Brazil . Four years later, they successfully defended the title in the 1988 final against Russia . In 1992 in Barcelona they won the bronze medal. At the second home game in Atlanta in 1996 and at the 2000 tournament there were worse results with places nine and eleven. In 2004 in Athens the USA lost the bronze game against Russia. In 2008 in Beijing they won the Olympic gold medal for the third time in the final against Brazil. In 2012 in London they were eliminated in the quarter-finals against Italy . At the 2016 tournament they won the bronze medal against Russia. They secured their starting place for Tokyo 2020 at an international qualifying tournament in Rotterdam .
NORCECA championship
At the premiere of the NORCECA championship in 1969, the USA took third place. In 1971 they reached the final against Cuba . In 1973 they won the same final and became continental champions for the first time. Two years later they finished third as hosts. After that, they missed the medal ranks twice in fifth place. In 1981 they lost another final against Cuba. In 1983 in their own country against Canada and 1985 against Cuba, they won the next titles before the rival from the island managed to take revenge two years later. In 1989 the USA finished third. From 1991 to 2001 the final pairing was always USA against Cuba, whereby the US team only prevailed in 1999. In the following three finals from 2003 to 2007, however, the USA were victorious against Canada, Cuba and Puerto Rico . After losing two finals against Cuba, the next tournament victory was against Canada in 2013. In 2015, the US was not there for the only time so far. In 2017 they reported back with the tournament victory against the Dominican Republic . They lost the 2019 final against Cuba.
World cup
The USA first took part in the World Cup in 1977 and became Zehnter.ch. In 1981 they weren't there. In 1985 they won the competition in the final against the Soviet Union. Against the same opponent they lost the game for third place in 1989 . Two years later they came third themselves. This was followed by four fourth places. At the 2011 tournament, they did worse with sixth place. In 2015 they achieved their second victory in this competition in the final against Italy. In 2019 they took third place again.
Nations League
In the first edition of the Nations League 2018 , the US won the game for third place against Brazil. At the tournament tournament 2019 they only barely reached the final round, but were only defeated in the final against Russia.
World league
In the first three tournaments of the world league from 1990 onwards, the USA climbed from seventh place to third place. In 1993, however, they were only ninth and in the following two years they failed each in the preliminary round. They then missed four times before finishing sixth in the 2000 tournament and ninth the following year. After another break, 2006 came tenth. In 2007, the United States came third. In 2008 they won the competition for the first time in the final against Serbia. In the following years they came in sixth, eighth and seven. In 2012 they only had to admit defeat in the final against Poland . But a year later the worst result in this competition was 14th place. In 2014, the USA won the final against Brazil and achieved the second victory in the world league. In 2015 they finished third and fourth and sixth in the last two editions.
