qualification

Host Greece and Brazil as Olympic champions in 1992 were automatically qualified. There were five more starting places for the best-placed teams in the last continental tournaments. In this way the Netherlands ( European Championship 1993 ), South Korea ( Asia ), Algeria ( Africa ), Cuba ( NORCECA ) and Argentina ( South America ) reached the final round. The group winners of six qualifying tournaments also made it to the finals in Greece. These were the German team (group A), which prevailed against Canada , Portugal and Hungary in Koblenz , as well as Bulgaria (group B in Granada ), the USA (group C in Paris ), Sweden (group D in Poland ), Russia ( Group E in Moscow ) and Canada (Group F in Tunis ). The last two starting positions went to China and Japan as winners of an Asian qualification.
