The 1998 men's volleyball world championship took place in Japan from November 13th to 29th . Italy won the title for the third time in a row. The games were played in Tokyo , Hiroshima , Osaka , Chiba , Hamamatsu , Fukuoka , Kobe , Sendai , Sapporo , Kawasaki and Uozu .

The 24 participants played in six groups of four in the first round. The group winners and runners-up as well as the four best group thirds reached the second round, which was held in two groups of eight. The six best teams in each group of the second round determined the ranks one to twelve in the knockout games.

Host Japan qualified automatically. The other starting places were awarded in continental qualifying tournaments.
Europe
In the first round there was a group of four and three groups of three, from which the two best teams reached the second round. There a group of three and five groups of four were formed. The winners of all groups as well as the second from the groups of four qualified for the World Cup finals.
In Group 1 (in Montecatini Terme ) hosts Italy and Turkey prevailed against Belgium and Finland . The German team only won against Croatia in Groningen and had to give the Netherlands and Ukraine the first places in Group 2. The Poles qualified in the home tournament in Olsztyn with wins against Hungary and Denmark as second in Group 3 behind Russia . In Sofia , Spain won Group 4, ahead of hosts Bulgaria , Slovakia and Romania . In Lamia , hosts Greece finished second in Group 5 and prevailed with Yugoslavia ahead of France and Sweden . In group 6, the Czech Republic won against Latvia and Portugal .
North and Central America
Seven teams competed in two groups for the NORCECA qualification . The group winners were qualified directly and the runners-up determined the third participant in a playoff round. In the first group, Canada prevailed in Havana against Cuba , Puerto Rico and Barbados . In the second group, the USA used the home advantage in San Antonio against Mexico and Haiti . Cuba won the duel between the group runners-up 3-1 and 3-0 against Mexico.
South America
The four teams that competed in South America played a double round in Santa Fe and Rio de Janeiro . Brazil became unbeaten group winners. Argentina finished second because of the better set ratio compared to Venezuela and also qualified. Peru had no chance with six defeats.
Asia
The five World Cup participants from Asia were determined in three qualification groups. In Jeddah , South Korea and Thailand prevailed against hosts Saudi Arabia and Indonesia . In Tehran , China and Iran were successful against Kazakhstan . Australia secured the last starting position in Navoiy with victories against Taiwan and Uzbekistan .
Africa
In Africa, the winners of two groups of three qualified for the World Cup. Algeria prevailed in Tunis against Tunisia and Kenya . Egypt stayed in Kano without losing a set against Nigeria and Cameroon .
