Men's volleyball world championship 2002

The 2002 men's volleyball world championship took place in Argentina from September 29th to October 13th . Brazil won the title for the first time. The games were played in Buenos Aires , San Juan , Santa Fe , Mar del Plata , Córdoba and Salta .

mode

The 24 participants played in six groups of four in the first round. The group winners and runners-up as well as the four best group thirds made it to the second round, which was held in four groups of four. The two best teams in each group of the second round reached the quarter-finals. The losers of the quarterfinals played for places five to eight. The winners of the quarterfinals determined the new world champion in the semifinals and final.

qualification

Host Argentina qualified automatically. The other starting places were awarded in continental qualifying tournaments.

Europe

The winners and the three best runners-up from seven groups of four qualified for the World Cup finals. In Seville , hosts Spain and Croatia prevailed against Austria and Norway . The Dutch only gave one set in 's-Hertogenbosch and qualified with Portugal ahead of Denmark and Israel . In Ostrava managed Czech qualification with wins against the Ukraine , Hungary and Slovenia . In Łódź , hosts Poland had to let the French win the group, while Latvia and Moldova had no chance. In Prešov , the better sentence ratio compared to Slovakia decided in favor of the Bulgarians ; Belgium and Romania only managed one victory each. The German team won only the last game against Bosnia in Tampere and finished third behind the qualified group winners Yugoslavia and hosts Finland . In Bursa , Greece and Russia prevailed against Turkey and Estonia .

North and Central America

In the NORCECA qualification , four teams initially competed in one group. The Dominican Republic and the Netherlands Antilles secured the two places for the second round ahead of Jamaica and Aruba . In Havana , Cuba won the group without losing a set against Mexico , Puerto Rico and the Antilles. In the other group, which played in Winnipeg , Canada was group winners ahead of the USA , which also qualified as the better runner-up, as well as the Dominican Republic and Barbados .

South America

In South America only three teams competed for qualification. Brazil did not deliver a set against Venezuela and Chile in São Caetano do Sul . Venezuela then prevailed in two playoff games against Mexico .

Asia

In Asia, the winners and the two best runners-up from three groups of four qualified. In Almaty , South Korea and host Kazakhstan took first place ahead of Indonesia and Uzbekistan . In Doha, Japan prevailed against India , Taiwan and Qatar . In Macau , China and Australia were successful against Thailand and Saudi Arabia .

Africa

In Africa, Nigeria and Kenya reached the second round in Benin City with wins against Namibia . There was a group of four and one group of three, the winners of which qualified for Argentina. In Cairo , Egypt were unbeaten group winners ahead of Cameroon , Nigeria and Morocco . In Algiers , Tunisia was successful against Algeria and Kenya .
