The Dutch national volleyball team for men is a selection of the best Dutch players who represent the Nederlandse Volleybal Bond in international tournaments and internationals.

history

World Championship

At the first volleyball world championship in 1949, the Dutch took tenth and last place. In 1956 and from 1962 to 1978 they achieved placements between twelve and sixteen. After two missed tournaments, they came back in 1990 in seventh place. In 1994 they were only defeated by Italy in the final. In 1998 and 2002 they finished sixth and ninth. They weren't at the 2006 World Cup .

Olympic games

The Dutch finished the first Olympic volleyball tournament in Tokyo in 1964 in eighth place. After finishing fifth in 1988, they lost to Brazil in the 1992 final. In 1996 in Atlanta they became Olympic champions in the final against Italy. In the 2000 and 2004 games , they finished fifth and ninth. The Dutch could not qualify for Beijing 2008 and London 2012 .

European Championship

At the first European volleyball championship in 1948, the Netherlands took the last of six places. In 1950 and 1955 they were missing. In 1951 and from 1958 to 1977 they achieved placements between nine and fifteen. After the missed tournaments in 1979 and 1981, they returned in 1983 in tenth place. Even in 1985 in their own country they did not get beyond this result. Two years later in neighboring Belgium they rose to fifth place. Two third places followed. In 1993 and 1995 the Dutch lost 3-2 to Italy in the final. In 1997 they became European champions as hosts in the final against Yugoslavia . Then they finished fifth, eighth and sixth. At the tournaments in 2005 and 2007 they failed in the preliminary round and in the second round. At the 2015 European Championships in Bulgaria and Italy, they defeated the Czech Republic (3: 1) and Germany (3: 2) in the preliminary round and lost to co-hosts Bulgaria (2: 3) in Sofia. They lost 3-0 to Slovenia in the round of 16 and ended up in 9th place.

World cup

At the premiere of the World Cup , the Dutch finished tenth. In 1995 they took part for the second time and only had to admit defeat to the Italians.

World league

In the first edition of the World League, the Dutch lost only to Italy. Two fourth places followed. In 1993 and 1995 the Dutch eliminated in the preliminary round, in between they finished fifth. In 1996 they won the competition against Italy in front of their own audience. They then finished fourth and third. From 1999 to 2003 they always failed in the preliminary round or second round. In 2013 they took part in the world league again after qualifying. In the group stage they finished second behind Canada and only missed out on the finals by one point, finishing 7th in 2014, 12th and in 2015, 13th.

European League

At the premiere of the Europa League in 2004 , the Dutch came third. In 2005 they weren't there, but in 2006 they won the competition in the final against Croatia . The title defense failed with the seventh place in 2007 . At the Final Four 2008 they were only defeated in the final against Slovakia . In 2011 they just missed the finals. In 2012 they won the Europa League with a 3-2 win in the final in Ankara against hosts Turkey . In the subsequent qualification for the 2013 World League, they first beat the Dominican Republic (3: 0; 3: 2) and Portugal (3: 2; 3: 2).
