After reunification , some active players from the GDR continued their careers in the joint German national team.

history

World championships

The GDR first took part in a world championship in Paris in 1956 and came eighth in the final group. In 1962 in Paris , the East Germans improved by one place. In 1967 they had to play in the tournament in Bulgaria as third in the preliminary round in the lower final group and were only tenth overall. Four years later, the World Cup in Mexico was much more successful. In the first two rounds, the GDR was only defeated in the two rounds against the Soviet Union and South Korea and was fourth behind these two teams and world champion Japan. In 1978 the GDR took part in a World Cup for the third time in a row. After a successful preliminary round, there was only one victory against Peru, which is why the women finished eighth. At the 1986 World Cup , they reached the semi-finals, but missed a medal and came fourth for the second time. Shortly before reunification, the GDR played its last World Cup in China in 1990 . She lost in the round of 16 and finally finished the last appearance in twelfth place.

European championships

From 1958 to 1989 the GDR was involved in every European championship. After an eighth place at the premiere, she came close to the medal ranks in 1963 and 1967 as fourth. Sixth place in 1971 was followed by the first medal four years later at the European Championships in Yugoslavia . The East Germans prevailed against the West German selection in the preliminary round and finally came third. In 1977 in Finland there was another German duel and the GDR was only defeated in the final of the Soviet Union. At the European Championship 1979 only the Soviet women were more successful. After a fourth place in 1981 at EM 1983 in his own country, the greatest success to date was achieved. The hosts reached the final round unbeaten, prevailed there against the Federal Republic, defending champion Bulgaria and the Soviet Union and won the title for the first time. In 1985 the USSR prevailed over the GDR. Two years later, the East Germans won the final of the tournament in Belgium, despite two sets deficit, 3-2 against their permanent competitors. In 1989 the Soviet Union managed to take revenge again at the European Championships in Germany .

Olympic games

The GDR national team took part in three Olympic Games. In 1976 in Montreal , she won only one of five games and finished sixth. In 1980, in Moscow , she achieved her greatest Olympic success. The East German women reached the semi-finals as runners-up, in which they beat Bulgaria in five sets. As in the preliminary round, they lost to the Soviet Union in the final and ended the tournament with a silver medal. At the last appearance in 1988 , the GDR finished the preliminary round as bottom of the group, but in the placement games they finished fifth with two wins.

World cup

The GDR only had its only appearance at the World Cup shortly before reunification. As a finalist of the previous EM, she was qualified for the 1989 tournament. They took sixth place.

World Grand Prix

The World Grand Prix only came into being after the end of the GDR.
