1977 European Women's Volleyball Championship

The 1977 European Women's Volleyball Championship took place in Finland from September 25th to October 2nd . The games were played in Tampere , Kotka , Lahti and Turku . The GDR was only defeated in the final by the Soviet Union , which won the title for the ninth time.

mode

The twelve participants were divided into two groups of six in the preliminary round. The group winners and runners-up reached the semi-finals. The other teams played for positions five to twelve.

qualification

Finland was set as the host. The top five teams from the 1975 European Championship were also automatically qualified. These were the Soviet Union as defending champions, the second Hungary , the third GDR , the fourth Czechoslovakia and the fifth Bulgaria .

Six other teams reached the finals through qualifying tournaments. In Bari , Yugoslavia and Italy prevailed against France and Turkey . The German selection , the Netherlands , Poland and Romania were also successful .
