The tournament began with a preliminary round in four groups (A – D) with four teams each. There were three points for a 3-0 or 3-1 win, two points for a 3-2 win, one point for a 3-2 defeat and a 1-3 or 0-3 defeat no point. In the event of a tie, the number of games won and then the rate quotient decided. If there was equality here too, the ball point quotient (BPQ) decided and finally the direct comparison of the teams concerned. The group winners qualified directly for the quarter-finals. The group runners-up and thirds met in a playoff round and determined the remaining quarter-finalists. The quarter-final winners reached the semi-finals. The losers in the semi-finals played for third place, the winners determined the new European champion in the final.
