2011 European Women's Volleyball Championship
The 2011 European Women's Volleyball Championship took place from September 23 to October 2, 2011 in Italy and Serbia . The German team qualified fourth at the last European Championship and won the silver medal. Host Serbia won gold .
mode
The tournament began with a preliminary round in four groups (A – D) with four teams each. There were three points for a 3-0 or 3-1 win, two points for a 3-2 win, one point for a 3-2 defeat and one for a 1-3 or 0 : 3 defeat there was no point. In the event of a tie, the rate quotient first decided. The group winners were directly qualified for the quarter-finals, while group runner-up and third played four round of 16 games. There, third in the group met runners-up before the respective winners met a group first. The winners of the four quarter-finals reached the semifinals. The losers in the semi-finals played for third place, the winners determined the new European champion in the final.

Venues
The games were played in Belgrade and Monza. The venue in Belgrade was the Pionir Hall , which seats around 8,200 spectators. The Palaiper sports hall in Monza has around 4,000 seats. In addition, the venues in Zrenjanin (Medison sports hall with around 2,800 seats) and in Busto Arsizio (PalaYamamay with around 5,000 seats) were used in the group phase.
qualification
In addition to the hosts Serbia and Italy , the teams that finished second to sixth behind winner Italy at the 2009 European Championships were automatically qualified. They were vice European champions Netherlands , third Poland , fourth Germany , fifth Turkey and sixth Russia .
The other teams had to contest a qualification that comprised a total of three rounds.
In the first round on 8./9. and May 15, 2010 there were two duels with back and forth legs. The Switzerland won against Luxembourg also without dropping a set by how Sweden against Denmark .
The second qualifying round consisted of six groups of four teams each, who met for two tournaments on May 21-23 and May 28-30. The group winners qualified directly for the European Championship, while the group runners-up played further playoff games in the third round in September.
In Group A (tournaments in Mahiljou and Baku ) Azerbaijan did not lose a single set. Belarus secured second place ahead of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Georgia .
In group B (tournaments in Karlsbad and Agde ) the Czech Republic remained unbeaten. France prevailed against Hungary and Austria .
In Group C (tournaments in Sjewjerodonetsk and Sheffield ) Ukraine lost only in one tiebreak game against the Slovaks , who had to leave second place to the team from Israel . Great Britain remained without a win.
In group D (tournaments in Osijek and Tres Cantos ) the Spaniards secured group victory because they lost one set less than the Croatians tied on points . Switzerland and Montenegro were eliminated.
In Group E (tournaments in Hasselt and Constanța ) Romania managed to win the group without losing. Belgium took second place ahead of Slovenia and Sweden.
In Group F (tournaments in Guarda and Samokow ) Bulgaria only lost one set. Finland prevailed against tied Greece because of the better set ratio , while Portugal lost all sets.
In the third round games on 3rd / 4th On September 11th and 11th, France did not give a set to Finland (3: 0 and 3: 0), Croatia defeated Belgium with difficulty (3: 1 and 3: 2) and Israel dramatically won the last place in the tournament in the fight against Belarus (2: 3 and 3: 1).
