Guarda ( Portuguese for: guard) is a city ( cidade ) in Portugal . Guarda is located on an eastern branch of the Serra da Estrela about 337 km northeast of Lisbon and is the highest city (1056 m above sea level) in Portugal. It is the eponymous capital of the Guarda district . Guarda is part of the Rede de Judiarias , the association of places with a historically significant Jewish community.

history

The Celtiberian Lusitanians lived here and resisted the Roman invaders for a long time, until 139 BC. The Lustian leader Viriatus was killed by a ruse by the Romans and the resistance collapsed. After the collapse of Rome, Guarda was part of the Visigoth Empire , in which it became a bishopric from the 6th century . After the Moors invaded in the 8th century, Guarda came under Arab rule and was left to decay. In the course of the Reconquista, the high altitude Guarda gained strategic importance for the first time. It received its first town charter in 1199 and has been with simultaneous resolution of the Diocese of Idanha-a-Velha important bishopric . For the last time Guarda played an important role in the history of Portugal as a weighty defensive post against the attempts to capture the kingdom of Castile and the subsequent revolution of 1383 , which ensured Portugal's independence in the Battle of Aljubarrota .

Culture, sports and sights

The most important sights include the Guarda Cathedral , built in 1374 and redesigned and expanded by Jean de Rouen from 1550 , the city walls and the castle, the historic town center and numerous architectural monuments. Guarda station is located on the Linha da Beira Alta and the Linha da Beira Baixa and is served by Intercidades , regional trains and other lines of the Comboios de Portugal . Guarda is connected to the international rail network with the Sud-Express .

Trunk roads

Guarda is connected to the national motorway network via the A23 and A25 motorways. The A25 as European route 80 also merges with the Spanish A-62 motorway from Vilar Formoso .

Air traffic

Guarda does not have its own public airport, the closest airport is Viseu Airport .

Local public transport

The public transport company Transportes Urbanos da Guarda is operated by the city administration ( Câmara Municipal ) in cooperation with Rodoviária da Beira S.A. , a company of the Transdev Group. The Transportes Urbanos da Guarda cover the city area with six bus routes. Depending on the route, they start their journeys between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. and run until 6 p.m. or after 11 p.m.

economy

Since the 1960s, there have been a number of large industrial companies, including a Renault plant , suppliers to the automotive industry, and important textile factories. With the exception of smaller industrial companies, the large industrial companies are no longer present in Guarda. With the Plataforma Logística da Guarda there is a supraregional significant logistics center. Electricity is produced in the surrounding dams. In addition, Guarda, as a regional center, is a regionally important commercial and administrative center. Tourism has gained in importance, in particular tourism rural has increased in the rural parts of the district as a result of the Aldeias Históricas de Portugal program . Agriculture continues to be an important economic factor.
