Seia is a municipality and city in Portugal on the northwestern edge of the Serra da Estrela in the Centro region . Seia is known for its Queijo Serra da Estrela cheese and its bread. There are 5,702 people living in the city and 6,923 people in the municipal area.
history
The city was founded as oppidum Sena by Celtiberian Turdulians about 2,400 years ago . After a long Moorish settlement in 1055, King Ferdinand I of León, known here as Fernando Magno , conquered the place who had it fortified. Belonging to the newly founded Kingdom of Portugal , the city received under its then name Civitatem Senam in 1136 the city rights ("Foral") from King Dom Afonso Henriques . In 1510 Manuel I renewed the town charter and enlarged the district ( concelho ) of Seia by some villages. At the beginning of the 19th century, the district was expanded again in the course of administrative reforms, and since the beginning of the 20th century it has comprised today's 29 municipalities (Freguesias) with 115 places. The previous small town ( Vila ) Seia was elevated to a town ( Cidade ) in 1986 .
Culture and sights
Seia has several museums, including the Museu do Pão (Bread Museum) and the Museu do Brinquedo (Toy Museum ). The youngest museum in the city, the Museu Natural da Electricidade, has been a museum of renewable energies , especially hydropower, since 2011 , with reference to the various hydropower plants in the area. The cultural complex of the Casa Municipal da Cultura (Municipal House of Culture) includes a cinema for 395 spectators, galleries, and a modern congress center with various halls (some with translation booths).
The CISE ( Centro de Interpretação da Serra da Estrela ) is a research institution that deals with the Serra da Estrela and its understanding, but also offers an interactive multimedia permanent exhibition, along with other cultural and didactic offers in its event center.
The annual international film festival for environmental films, the CineEco, has been taking place at CISE since 1995 .
In Seia, opportunities are mainly offered for nature-based sports, such as rafting and canoeing , or hiking and mountain hiking , e.g. B. on special mountain village hiking routes ( Aldeias da Montanha ). Winter sports are seasonal here.
