Manteigas is a small town ( vila ) and a district ( concelho ) in the Serra da Estrela in the Portuguese region of Centro .
history
The Portuguese word Manteiga means butter and is one of the few words from the time before the Roman rule in Portugal that has been preserved from the language of the indigenous people of today's Portugal ( Lusitaner , Konii, Iberer ) to modern Portuguese. The area around Manteigas is famous for its dairy products, e.g. B. for the Queijo da Serra da Estrela , which is considered the best cheese in Portugal, and for its thermal springs , Caldas de Manteigas .
Manteigas got the town charter ( Portuguese : Foral ) in 1188 by King Dom Sancho I , which was renewed by King Dom Manuel I in 1514.
