Celorico da Beira is a vila (small town) and a district ( concelho ) in Portugal .
history
Celtiberian Turdulians settled in the area, whereby the different theories of historians assume periods of time between 500 BC. BC to back to 2000 BC Go. After the area was conquered by the Romans , various Roman roads ran through today's Celorico da Beira, some of which have been preserved in various places in the district.
In the course of the Reconquista and Portugal's efforts to achieve independence from its Spanish neighbors, various fortresses were built, such as Linhares , and settlement was promoted. In the further course the strategic importance of the area decreased again, with the relocation of the Reconquista to the south and the consolidation of the independent Kingdom of Portugal after the Treaty of Alcañices in 1297. Celorico da Beira received city rights ( Foral ) for the first time after its reconquest from the Moors in 12 Century, but no exact date has been reported. In 1512 King Manuel I renewed the town charter and elevated Celorico to vila, a small town with special administrative rights.
During the Napoleonic Wars on the Iberian Peninsula , Celorico was the scene of troop movements several times. The French units under Loison camped here on their retreat from Lamego in 1808. In September 1810, Masséna's troops were in Celorico, three months before the later General Wellington reached the area. In March, Masséna was in Celorico for the last time.
Culture, sports and sights
Linhares da Beira is one of the twelve historic villages in the municipality , the Aldeias Históricas de Portugal . In addition to the regional, longer hiking trails, the local administration in the district has also created shorter, thematically arranged circular routes, PR 1 to 3 ( Pequenas Rotas , Portuguese for: small routes).
The cheese and agriculture museum Museu do Agricultor e do Queijo is open to visitors, as is the Castelo de Celorico da Beira and a number of other monuments in the district. In the towns of Celorico da Beira and Linhares there are tourist information offices open, the Postos de Turismo .
