The contract

The Treaty of Alcañices is a peace treaty concluded on September 12, 1297 between the Portuguese King Dionysius and King Ferdinand IV of Castile , with which the borders between Portugal and Castile were established. The treaty ended a series of armed conflicts between the countries. For example, the former Castilian king Sancho IV had invaded Portugal and, after his death in 1295, Dionysius in Castile. The border decided at that time corresponds essentially to the current border between Portugal and Spain . The contract is named after the Spanish town of Alcañices (in Portuguese : Alcanizes ).

The manuscript of the contract is in the Torre do Tombo in Portugal.
