history

Since prehistoric times man has settled in the valley of the Côa , which flows into the Douro here . The name of the place is derived from this (German approximately: Neustadt an der Côa estuary).

Located in the strategically important border region, the place received city rights ( Foral ) for the first time in 1299 by King D Dinis . The place was on the side of Castile in the revolution of 1383 and subsequently lost more and more privileges and attention. The decision to dissolve his independent group in the meantime was not carried out. In 1514 the city rights were renewed by King Manuel I.

During the Liberal Revolution of 1822 and the civil war that followed, the place was the scene of frequent unrest.

Vila Nova de Foz Côa was named a city ( Cidade ) in 1997 , and in 1998 its numerous archaeological excavations and prehistoric rock art sites were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List . In early 2013 , the city was recognized by the World Health Organization as particularly senior-friendly.
