This is a list of the cities in Portugal , sorted alphabetically by population in Cidades (larger cities) and Vilas (small towns or large municipalities), these are municipalities ( freguesias ) that have qualified as the corresponding city forms according to their population and infrastructure .
Urban settlements by population
The two largest agglomerations in Portugal by far are the capital Lisbon with a population of 2,616,078 and Porto with a population of 1,277,279 (as of January 1, 2006). This means that 37 percent of the country's population is concentrated in these two regions.
The following table contains the urban settlements with more than 30,000 inhabitants, the results of the census of March 16, 1981, April 15, 1991 and March 1, 2001 as well as for March 1, 2006. The region to which the city belongs is also listed heard. The population figures refer to the respective urban settlement - the geographical urban area - not to the city or municipality in the political sense.
