Santa Marinha is a locality and former municipality in Portugal .

history

A Roman bridge has been preserved from Roman times .

Today's place was probably created with the new settlements during the Reconquista . The place received its first city rights in 1150 by Portugal's first king, D. Afonso Henriques , which were renewed and confirmed on May 15, 1514 by King D. Manuel I. It remained the seat of an independent circle until the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 and the Miguelistenkrieg that followed in 1834 . Santa Marinha County was dissolved in 1836. It has been a parish of Seia County since 1846.

The town of Santa Marinha is mentioned especially after the introduction of the Inquisition in Portugal in 1531, when the Sephardi settled this place. Under the direction of the sociologist Alberto da Trinidade Marinho from the Catholic University in Viseu , scientists examined the sometimes centuries-old buildings in the small mountain villages. In the town of Santa Marinha alone there are more than 42 houses with markings that indicate Jewish residents. On the stone door frames of the houses there are clear signs that Mezuzot was once attached there. The researchers also found numerous crucifixes with Hebrew characters and symbols that Jews used to mark their homes. The finds made it possible to reconstruct the social and economic life of the Jews in Santa Marinha. The remains of the last synagogue built in Santa Marinha before the Inquisition dates back to 1496. Santa Marinha is to be integrated into the Rede de Judiarias , a circular route of the Jewish heritage.
