Viseu (formerly Vizeu ) ( IPA [ vi'zeu ]) is a city and also the administrative seat of the district of the same name in central Portugal on the Rio Pavia . The urban population is 99,369 (as of June 30, 2011), with suburbs 395,000 (2008).
history
Finds prove a settlement since the Castro culture . Chief Viriathus (port .: Viriato) led the Lusitans here successfully in the resistance against the advancing Romans in the second century BC. Until they were able to kill Viriathus by a trick and also take this area. Various milestones of Roman roads crossing here have been preserved. After the invasion of the Suebi and Visigoths in the 6th century AD, Viseu became a bishopric.
Since the beginning of the 8th century, the region was ruled by the Moors or the Aftasids from Badajoz and Viseu was given the name Bazu. In the course of the Reconquista , Viseu remained contested. In 1027 King Alfonso V (León) fell during the siege of Viseus. Ferdinand I (León) was finally able to conquer the region from the Arabs together with Lamego in 1057 .
Viseu received its first town charter ( Foral ) in 1123 from Theresa of Castile (port .: D.Teresa). After the independence of the Kingdom of Portugal in 1139, her son D.Afonso Henriques renewed the city rights of Viseus in his capacity as the first Portuguese king in 1187 , which his grandson, King D.Afonso II , confirmed in 1217 .
In the course of the revolution of 1383 Viseu suffered some destruction, after which King D. João I had the place re-fortified. In 1513 King D. Manuel I renewed the city rights of Viseus in the course of his administrative reforms.
Grão Vasco founded the painting school of Viseu at the beginning of the 16th century, which made Viseu known as the city of painters through numerous masters of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.
In the 19th century the city continued to grow and the new town hall was built on the new Rossio Square. The center of the city now shifted from the higher old part down towards the river. The Rua Direita shopping street , which has now been converted into a pedestrian zone, connects the higher parts with the lower district.
Culture and sights
The most important museums in the city include the Museum of Sacred Art ( Museu de Arte Sacra ), the Museu Grão Vasco , created between 2001 and 2003 by Eduardo Souto de Moura in a historic building next to the cathedral , and the Museu de Almeida Moreira .
The Sé de Viseu Cathedral has been preserved from the Middle Ages , and despite numerous additions and alterations, it still retained parts of its Romanesque portals and the south tower. Other important architectural monuments are the Roman-Lusitan fortress remains Cava de Viriato and the theater Teatro Viriato (formerly Teatro Boa União ) from the 19th century, in addition to a large number of sacred buildings and historical public and private buildings. The restored old town around the central Rossio town hall square is well worth seeing. Carriages are available for exploring the traffic-calmed city center.
Various Antas and other megalithic systems can be seen in the Viseus area . Various hiking trails, some of which are thematically sorted, are laid out in a circle and lead through the mountainous forests, some also to the historic old town of Viseus.

Long-distance transport
The New Viseu Airport, which was Viseu Airfield until 2015 , was renovated for around € 30 million by the end of 2014 and all Category 3 security tests were carried out and passed. According to the city of Viseu on the Portuguese television broadcaster RTP , the airport will be used for national and international flights with De Havilland DHC- 8-200 and ATR 42 from the beginning of 2015 . The airport is located around 10 kilometers north of Viseu. It is also used by the Portuguese Army as a flight school location with a Lockheed C-130 and by sport and private aircraft.
Viseu is an important transshipment point in the center of Portugal, here the important European overland connections IP3 / A24 ( Autoestrada A24 ) and IP5 / A25 ( Autoestrada A25 , here also European route 80 ), which connect the seaport Aveiro and Guarda with Spain and Salamanca .
With the closure of the Linha do Dão line for passenger traffic in 1988 and the closure of the Ramal de Viseu as a connection to the Linha do Vouga in 1990, the city lost its connection to the country's rail network. The plans for a European network of high-speed lines envisaged Viseu as a stop on the Salamanca-Aveiro line, but in view of the budget problems in Portugal and Spain as a result of the ongoing banking and financial crisis, no further planning steps have become known.
Viseu is integrated into the national bus network of Rede Expressos . Other companies also offer national bus connections from the central bus station.
Local public transport
The electric, rail-bound cable car Funicular de Viseu opened in 2009. It brings passengers free of charge from the lower historical city center on the river bank to the 400 meter high church square by the cathedral. It runs along the Rua Direita, a pedestrianized shopping street, and runs every half hour.
In the historic city center, electric minibuses run on two lines marked in blue (port .: Linha azul ), while another 22 bus routes ensure local transport throughout the city and district. The cable car and all 24 bus routes are operated by the municipal transport company Serviço de Transportes Urbanos de Viseu (STUV), which has granted the bus service to Empresa Berrelhas de Camionagem, Lda. from Viseu has awarded.

Industry includes the textile industry, furniture manufacturing and metal processing companies, including suppliers to the automotive industry. In the near Mangualde maintains PSA Peugeot Citroën a work. The Portuguese Martifer Group is also a major employer here. With Visabeira , one of the most important corporate groups in the country is also based here.
Wine ( Dão ) is particularly well-known among agricultural products . As a regional center , in addition to authorities and administration, trade provides economic impetus.
