Gondomar [ ɡõduˈmaɾ ] is a city ( Cidade ) in Portugal with about 26,000 inhabitants.
history
Finds prove a prehistoric settlement. The Romans mined gold in the area and took advantage of the strategic location. The name comes from its time as a place of the Visigothic Empire and is derived from the Visigothic king Gundemar , who set up an administrative district here in 610 AD. However, the Visigoths left no traces in Gondomar.
The current place was probably created during the resettlement during the Christian Reconquista . King D. Sancho I granted Gondomar the first city rights in 1193, which were renewed by King D. Manuel I in 1515 as part of his administrative reforms.
In 1868 the district of Gondomar was expanded to include a number of parishes, including the newly formed municipality of São Cosme as the district's headquarters. Gondomar was elevated to a small town ( Vila ) in 1927 and a city ( Cidade ) in 1991 . In 1995 Rio Tinto and in 2005 Valbom were elevated to the status of a city.
Sports
The football club Gondomar SC plays its home games of the Série C of the third division ( Campeonato Nacional de Seniores ) in the Estádio de São Miguel stadium in Gondomar, which holds 2,450 spectators . (Status: 2013/14 season)
